Chafariz do Largo de S. Paulo

Pouco mudou no século que separa estas duas imagens. O Largo de São Paulo permanece praticamente o mesmo desde os tempos de Roque Gameiro. O estilo pombalino prevalece ainda nas fachadas dos edifícios circundantes. O chafariz do séc. XIX ainda se encontra no centro da praça. Todavia, são de notar algumas mudanças: as árvores cresceram até à altura dos edifícios; as pessoas ainda se juntam na praça para beber, mas a água do chafariz foi substituida pela cerveja e pelos gins tónicos dos bares próximos.

Little has changed in the century that spans between these two images. The São Paulo square remains pretty much the same since the time of Roque Gameiro. The late 18th century style architecture that characterized the post-earthquake reconstruction prevails. The 19th century fountain is still in the center of the square. A few noteworthy changes: the trees have grown enough to cover the austere building façades; people still gather in the square to drink, but the fountain’s water has been replaced with beer and gin and tonics from the nearby bars.
