10 years of Urban Sketchers Portugal

My part in the celebration of the 10 years of the Urban Sketchers Portugal chapter was, unfortunately, very short. There was a whole weekend planned out, but work kept me until Sunday morning, when I had the chance to join the sketchbook and brush gang.

Arriving at Terreiro do Paço, I saw dozens of people in the north side of the statue of D. José, and sat down sketching with them. I saw friendly, familiar and unfamiliar faces, old faces and very young faces. I saw Nelson Paciência running around so fast that sometimes he was sitting and sketching, other times he was taking photos with different clothes. I saw later that I had missed half the sketchers who sat on the sunny side of the equestrian statue. I saw the founder, Gabi Campanario. I saw flashbacks from the 2011 Lisbon Symposium, which, at a distance, looked really tiny. I saw these past ten years that changed my life completely, and I saw the main role that the urban sketchers had in that change!

Then, the food came, and I saw nothing else.

A minha participação na celebração dos 10 anos dos Urban Sketchers Portugal foi, infelizmente, muito limitada. Com o sábado a trabalhar, apenas tive a manhã de domingo para me juntar à malta de caderno e pincéis em riste.

À chegada ao Terreiro do Paço, vi dezenas de pessoas no lado norte da estátua do D. José, e sentei-me logo com elas a desenhar. Vi rostos amigos, conhecidos e desconhecidos, rostos mais antigos e rostos muito novos. Vi o Nelson Paciência tão atarefado que ora estava a desenhar sentado no chão, ora estava de pé a fotografar com outra roupa já. Vi mais tarde que me desencontrei de metade dos desenhadores, porque estavam no lado solarengo da estátua equestre. Vi o fundador, Gabi Campanario. Vi flashbacks do Simpósio de 2011 de Lisboa, que à distância, parece uma miniatura. Vi estes dez anos todos, que tanto mudaram a minha vida, e vi o papel principal que os urban sketchers tiveram nessa mudança!

Depois puseram-me comida à frente e não vi mais nada.
